Critics say employment services bill will result in a more bureaucratic labour market

The draft
employment services bill intends to give the government an essential role in facilitating employment, but critics say centralising hiring in the Department of Labour will damage the job market.

Ian Ollis, the DA’s deputy spokesman on labour, said this week that aspects of the bill had potentially devastating consequences.

Employment statistics show how ANC is chasing its own tail on labour policy

The Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) for December 2009 released today by StatsSA show that 351 000 jobs were lost between December 2008 and 2009. This is a severe indictment of ANC economic policy geared towards creating “decent jobs” – as combined losses in manufacturing and construction sums up to 152 000 – or 43.3% of jobs lost. (see table below)
