The Department of Labour wants to radically redesign the workplace - and
increase state surveillance in the corporate world. The Department of
Labour has revealed a plan to radically redesign the work environment,

the South African economy, the Employment Services Bill, is being tabled
before Cabinet. If this Bill becomes law, it will see the Department of

Business ReportDraft legislation now before Cabinet will make the labour department a
massive labour broker and severely restrict the free market in
employment, the Democratic Alliance said on Tuesday.

One million more unemployed since the fourth quarter of 2008

Figures released today by
Statistics South Africa show a 0.9% increase in unemployment in the
first quarter, to 25.2%. This means that 171 000 jobs were lost between
the fourth quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010. The further
rise in unemployment is particularly concerning given that there are
signs of recovery elsewhere in the economy.

Employment statistics show how ANC is chasing its own tail on labour policy

The Quarterly Employment
Statistics (QES) for December 2009 released today by StatsSA show that
351 000 jobs were lost between December 2008 and 2009. This is a severe
indictment of ANC economic policy geared towards creating “decent jobs” –
as combined losses in manufacturing and construction sums up to 152 000
– or 43.3% of jobs lost. (see table below)
