has revealed that the Department of Labour spent nearly R
350 000 on an end-of-year function for 150
department officials in December 2009. Guests from around the country
were treated to return flights to Gauteng, hotel accommodation at an

The missing R1-billion: Labour Department must explain Compensation Fund figures

The Labour Department must explain
what happened to R1-billion in Compensation Fund payouts, after a
presentation to the Parliamentary Labour Committee this week revealed an
inexplicable R1-billion shortfall in compensation paid out to injured
workers in this last financial year.
During
2009/10 there has been a dramatic decline in payouts – from 150,090,
amounting to R2,9 billion in 2008/09, to 87,800, amounting to R1,9
billion in 2009/10.

One million more unemployed since the fourth quarter of 2008

Figures released today by
Statistics South Africa show a 0.9% increase in unemployment in the
first quarter, to 25.2%. This means that 171 000 jobs were lost between
the fourth quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010. The further
rise in unemployment is particularly concerning given that there are
signs of recovery elsewhere in the economy.

No apology from Labour DG for “embarrassing behaviour”

refusal by Director General (DG) of Labour, Jimmy Manyi, to publicly
apologise before Parliament for his attempt to inflate the Department’s
budget by R 1 billion must be met by action from the Minister. The DA
revealed that Manyi had attempted to inflate the budget of the
department, in order to offer a post facto legitimate reason for

Figures released by
Statistics South Africa this week indicate that despite a 1% rise in
unemployment nationally between the last quarter of 2009 and the first
quarter of 2010, the unemployment rate in the DA-governed Western Cape
has fallen by more than 1% during the same time period.
